what is lumbar spondylosis ?
There are many different pains that the body feels when getting old. Three-legged colic is chief among them. There can be various reasons for that. But the most common pain that is unbearable in the morning and gradually subsides, doctors call it as “Lumbar spondylosis“, or spondylosis of the lumbar region. Today we will find out about it.
What is Lumber Spondylosis?
This is a condition caused by the degeneration of the spongy intervertebral discs and their associated joints and the formation of new bony parts between them.
What are the changes in the vertebrae and intervertebral discs in this condition?
These changes occur with aging. Rod-like bone fragments called osteophytes grow out of the vertebrae. These most commonly develop on the front and sides of the ventricles. As we age, the outer fibrous part of the intervertebral discs thickens and their elasticity decreases. As a result, the gelatinous substance in the middle is pushed out.
Bone growth between the vertebrae reduces the movement of the vertebrae and causes the back to lose flexibility. (bamboo spine)
lumbar spondylosis symptoms?
The main symptom is pain in the triceps area. This pain is worse in the morning. Decreases with daily activities. Strenuous activities aggravate this pain. When the spinal cord or nerve roots are pressed due to bony growths in the vertebrae while the back becomes stiff, this back pain spreads to the buttock area or the leg.
Complications that may occur due to this disease:
Lumber radiculopathy condition
Spondylolysis or bones sliding on each other
Weakness of leg muscles. (myelopathy)
Lumbar Spinal Stenosis is the decrease in the width of the bony canal through which the spinal cord travels.
How to diagnose the diseased?
This condition can be clinically diagnosed based on the patient’s history and physical examination. X-rays and MRIs of the spine are used to confirm the condition.
What are the causes of this disease?
Aging is the only known cause of this condition.
What are the treatments for this condition?
There are non-pharmacological exercise therapies for this, as well as drugs and surgery.
Exercises to strengthen back muscles
Wearing a Lumber corset for three legs
Limiting activities that cause back pain
Use of pain relievers and anti-stiffness medications to control severe back pain.
This is treated by back surgery when the condition worsens and the spinal cord or nerve root is compressed.
