What causes lack of deep sleep?
Getting enough deep sleep regularly is essential for a person’s good physical and mental health. This is generally considered to be around 7 hours of continuous time per day. But this health condition that interferes with deep sleep can exist even if many people don’t know it. What happens here is that the body does not get the oxygen gas it needs properly because the body is active in a way that interferes with breathing during sleep. As a result, due to a relative increase in the amount of carbon dioxide contained in the blood, a person wakes up from a deep sleep for a few moments and breathes hard. Stopping breathing for several seconds or taking short breaths followed by sudden deep breathing is seen here. This is a condition that can be more common and even fatal than we think.
This situation is mainly due to,
- Muscle spasms in the throat or other airway obstruction.
- Failure of the brain to send proper stimulus messages to the muscles that operate the respiratory mechanism.
- A combination of both the above conditions.
This is mostly due to relaxation of the muscles of the throat during sleep, causing a mechanical obstruction to the airway. Airway obstruction can also occur due to the presence of nasal muscles, swelling of respiratory tissue due to allergies, enlargement of lymph nodes. Then snoring occurs during sleep. Breathing is also done irregularly. The snoring stops after a while and the breathing stops for a while. Breathing will return to normal after a while, which is due to awakening from deep sleep. When you fall back into deep sleep, you start snoring as before, and it reaches a high state and stops breathing as before. Deep sleep is interrupted when this happens at least five times an hour or more. This is often unobserved by the person and is observed by others nearby while he sleeps.
Majority of the people suffer from the above-mentioned respiratory tract obstruction. Also, having to wake up from sleep due to difficulty in breathing without snoring is caused by a weakness in the transmission of nerve impulses in the brain as well as some heart diseases. Some people have this condition due to a combination of both of these reasons.

People who are at higher risk of suffering from this condition due to airway obstruction are:
- Obese people
- People with neck fat (where a neck circumference of more than 17 inches or 43 cm in men and 15 inches or 38 cm in women increases the risk of developing this condition.)
- Congenital thin airway. Location or presence of large phlegm in the throat
- Men are at twice the risk of women
- Middle or old age
- Smoking causes three times the risk of the average person due to constant inflammation in the airways due to excess moisture.
- Drinking alcohol
- Use of drugs used to calm the mind
- Family blood relatives having this condition
- Constantly suffering from allergies and long-term presence of phlegm in the nose.
Diagnosing the disease: For this, in a sleep clinic, when the person falls asleep, his breathing pattern, speed and rhythm, blood oxygen concentration, heart activity, brain activity, and limb movements during sleep will be monitored throughout the night. Appropriate treatment will be given by the doctors according to the data found from it.
Treatment: Medical devices that can be worn in the nose or mouth while sleeping and minor surgery to drink or spray into the nose are used to treat the condition depending on the condition. However, in order to avoid this condition, it is advisable to maintain the body weight at the optimum level and regularly do aerobic breathing exercises, and sleeping on the side or on the front helps to prevent airway obstruction. Apart from this, it is essential to avoid drinking alcohol and smoking.
