How to treat a broken hand ?
If we break bones, we definitely have to go to a hospital. Most of us are aware of what happens in the hospital in case of a broken bone like this. “Plaster mortar will be applied…or an antenna will be applied…or else a nail plate will be applied…” If asked about this in general, that is the answer that many people give. Although it is said this way in common usage, but in medical terms, we say this in a heavy way like “Plast of Paris cast, External fixation, Internal fixation”.
Now let’s see what happens in these so-called treatments when a bone is broken. Everyone knows about plaster mortar. The primary purpose of all the above treatments is to bring the separated face of the bone as close as possible, to keep it stable and not move and to protect the wounds so that germs do not enter. (Even if a germ gets inside these bones by mistake, it will be in a lot of trouble) Also, providing the necessary nutrition and controlling the pain is what should be done here. If this is done correctly, the bones will heal again “according to the natural healing process”, the time taken for this can vary depending on age, medical conditions, and the nature of the bone.
In this article, we are going to talk about fixing broken bones with nails and plates in severe accidents instead of plastering. About the risks that may arise there.
This method of applying “nails and plates” is mainly important to speed up the healing process, “to keep the separated face of the bone as close as possible, set to the proper shape of the bone, and keep it stable and motionless.” A surgical treatment is to be done for this. There are two ways to do it. That is External fixation (in that conversation it is called putting an antenna) and Internal fixation. This is how it is said to put pins and plates in the conversation. In both these cases, bone graft surgery or orthopedic surgery is performed.
Now let’s see what is called an antenna if not an EF. This involves fixing an externally attached metal frame with screws that go through the broken bone. In that way, this is used to correct and stabilize the position of the bone fracture, and perhaps to apply some pressure to reduce the gap between the fractured bone face. Also, this system helps to support the healing process by retightening or loosening as needed using the external screw.
But there are some small problems. Because this metal frame has pierced the bone and parts of it have come out through the skin, there is a risk of infection with germs if not taken care of properly. Therefore, if an EF has an external fixation, the wounds where the external metal rods appeared should be kept very clean. Otherwise, if a germ enters the bone at this time, the disease called Osteomyelitis will develop, and it will probably become a life-changing factor.
This metal frame is temporary. It’s a bit annoying and there may be a little ache. After all, after a certain period (the period varies according to the bone fracture) this frame is removed, so you have to do difficult activities only for those few days.
Next, let’s look at internal fixation or the method of raising bones so that they do not come out. Pins, screws and metal rods are used for this purpose. Apart from this, with the help of nails and screws, a plate made of metals like titanium can be used to hold the broken part together. In addition, there are times when you have to use wire. The most important thing is that all these devices are made using non-toxic and light and strong metals that can be mixed with titanium or cobalt. Others insert and attach these devices to the bone in a sterile operating room. Therefore, the risk of germs entering the body with these devices is very low. If done correctly under proper facilities, the risk can be said to be zero.
These “metal pieces” do not harm other tissues of our body. Less likely to be allergic. However, this external fixation will be removed in a few weeks. But you have to remove the internal fixation or live with it for the rest of your life depending on the treatment. However, in any of these treatments, there is a chance of getting some negative results. Now let’s see what those unexpected things with limited space can say.
Chief among these is infection. (Infections) For this, the personal cleanliness of the patient as well as the way this treatment is carried out and the cleanliness of the equipment used are of fundamental importance. Also, the patient’s nutritional status and mental status also help to limit these disasters. Next, bleeding and blood clots may occur in connection with this break. In these cases, locally, that means severe pain in the place and a slight fever, a change in the color of the skin associated with the wound, and loss of appetite can also occur. However, both of these cases can often be diagnosed during the days you are in the hospital environment, so you can get treatment without much trouble.
Here these people need to be a little more careful than others. Those are people suffering from diabetes, people who have had heart attacks and are being treated for them, people who have had problems related to blood clotting in the past, and people who are addicted to smoking. These people are more prone to infections and other complications.
How to be careful
Now let’s see how to be careful with this treatment, after the treatment you will be kept in the hospital under the supervision of the health staff for a few days. For a period of seven to ten days. If there is no other problem, you can go home.
But you will have to do some paperwork to go home with that antenna. Because that device is expensive. And it can be reused. Therefore, before going home with an external fixation, in addition to the normal documents according to the rules of the hospital, a money deposit or some kind of guarantee will have to be made. This will not be necessary in a private hospital. (I don’t know about that.)
It is very important to follow the instructions of the health staff during the few days in the hospital. If you don’t get out of bed after the specified period, exercise your limbs, even if you don’t like it, even if you have pain, there are chances that more problems will arise. Also, it is important to take the medicine correctly. Often deep breathing exercises will also be done. That is also very important.
If symptoms like these occur, you should immediately visit the hospital, clinic or doctor related to your treatment. What are the risk factors? If the pain around the relevant wound increases a lot, and if there is a fever at the same time, it is a sign of an infection. This is not a good situation to wait.
